Note:
Charles Lennox inherited the title of the 4th Duke of Richmond in 1806 and became the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland. Richmond had a storied military career and became a British Army captain at the young age of 23 in 1787, rising shortly afterward to the rank of colonel. Involved in multiple duels as a young man, he soon settled down and married Lady Charlotte Gordon. After becoming Duke, he served in the Napoleonic Wars. His wife became an influential figure in her own right, holding the Duchess of Richmond’s ball the night before the Battle of Quatre Bras. The ball was described as the most famous in history. True to its legendary status, the event was immortalized by William Makepeace Thackeray in Vanity Fair and by Lord Byron in Childe Harold’s Pilgrimage.
