Note: Benton was best-known as an ornamentalist painter of trompe-l'oeil interior decoration. His biggest commission was for the J. Paul Getty Museum in Malibu, CA where his murals cover the garden walls. He also painted wall murals for the Gettys in their San Francisco residence, one infamously painted over by mistake during a renovation project that ignited a legal battle between the artist and his patrons. Benton was a cousin of American painter Thomas Hart Benton and studied art at UCLA.
