Oil on panel, unsigned, inscribed '..../de Jeune Adélaide de Maintenon' on canvas attached to the reverse of the panel. 26 x 19 1/2 in., 29 x 23 in. (frame). Note: The inscription on the reverse may make reference to Marie Adélaide (1685-1712), Dutchess of Savoy, who married the Duke of Burgundy. The young Dutchess came to France at age eleven to marry the Duc de Bourgogne, who was thirteen. Mme. de Maintenon, second wife of Louis XIV, was put in charge of Adélaide's education at the school she had founded at Saint-Cyr. Adélaide and the Duke would become the parents of Louis XV.
