Note: This work is from a series of sculptures known as Maulschelle, which translates to "box on the ears". The word maul is a colloquial and often derogatory term for "mouth". The Maulschelle works are categorized as Passtucke, meaning a sculpture meant to be used by the owner. The concept of the Maulschelle and the artist's intended use for them is described in the monograph Franz West Notes: Writings 1975-2011, 2018, p. 38. The circa date of this work was provided by the artist's studio.
