Watercolor on paper, 1898, signed 'F.P. Sauerwein' and dated lower left, with label from Gerald P. Peters, Santa Fe, NM; Smith Kramer, Inc. 13 1/4 x 9 in. (sight), 21 1/2 x 17 1/2 in. (frame). Provenance: The John A. and Margaret Hill Collection of American Western Art. Note: Frank Sauerwein studied art with his father, artist Charles D. Sauerwein (1839-1918), before studying at the Philadelphia School of Industrial Art, The Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art, the Art Institute of Chicago and the Philadelphia Museum School of Art. After developing tuberculosis, Sauerwein moved out West to improve his health, settling finally in Taos. He is best known for his portraits of Native Americans and Western genre scenes. This work, and the following fourteen lots (except lot 146A), was part of the John A. and Margaret Hill Collection of American Western Art. The collection was exhibited in several museum exhibitions including The John A. and Margaret Hill Collection of American Western Art, at the Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum, June 23-August 26, 2001 and the Hunter Museum of American Art, Chattanooga, TN, June 28-September 14, 2003.,
