Mortimer spent his life by the sea, his favorite subject, with his self-made waterproof cameras by his side. Mortimer was considered a pioneer, using innovative techniques such as multiple composite negatives and the use of bromoil, he pushed the boundaries of photography at the time into the realm of fine art. During World War I, Mortimer trained his lens on the trenches, capturing moving images of men in war.
