Oil on canvas, unsigned, lined. 54 x 42 1/2 in., 54 1/2 x 43 in. (frame). Note: The original del Piombo painting is in the Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza, Madrid. Ferry Carondelet (1473-1528) was a Habsburg diplomat and church advisor to Margaret of Austria, the regent of the Spanish Netherlands. He received his clerical orders from the University of Franche-Comte and was named Archdeacon of the Besancon church in 1504. Provenance: Comm. Carlo Foresti, Milan (until 1929); Anonymous sale, Kunst-und-Auktionshaus A-G, Zurich, November 25-27, 1931, lot 891, illustrated pl. XXIV (as by Sebastiano del Piombo); Private Collection, Zurich (1931-1980); Private Collection, Massachusetts; thence by descent.
