Oil on canvas, unsigned, lined, with an indistinct inkstamp on the reverse. 34 1/2 x 26 1/2 in., 41 x 33 in. (frame). Provenance: Sold Doyle, October 27, 1997, Lot 29A. Note: In Greek mythology, the centaur Nessus tried to rape Deianira, wife of Hercules. Hercules shot Nessus with a poisoned arrow and as he lay dying, Nessus told Deianira to take some of his blood and make a potion that would keep her husband faithful to her. Hercules travelled all over Greece fathering illegitimate children, eventually falling in love with Iole. Fearing abandoned by her husband, Deianira put some of the potion onto Hercules' shirt. The potion was toxic and caused Hercules to throw himself onto a pyre and die. Realizing what she had done, Deianira hanged herself.
