The Englishman, Thomas Hope was a great classicist who spent eight years traveling in Greece and the Eastern Mediterranean where he acquired a passion for Greek art and architecture. He began to design furniture in order to provide himself with a suitable background for his collection of classical and neoclassical statuary and objects d'art. Hope published his designs as Household Furniture and Decorations in 1807, and thereby exerted considerable influence on furniture design in England in the early 19th century.
