Cope Patent.

Note: Scagliola is a material used since Roman times to imitate marble, and later pietra dura. It is composed of pulverized selenite, applied to a wet gesso ground, fixed under heat and highly polished. Mainly used for columns, pilasters and other interior architectural features. Its artistic possibilities were developed from the 16th Century onwards for table tops, especially in 18th century Florence where Enrico Hughford and Lamberto Cristiano Gori used it for imitation Florentine mosaic. Lit: Bartoli & E. A. Maser, Il Museuo dell'Opificio delle Pietre Dure, Florence, 1953.
