Note: John Cobb (1710-1778) was one of England's finest cabinet-makers in the 18th century. He was in partnership with William Vile from 1750 to 1765 in London. They supplied a superb ivory inlaid mahogany jewel cabinet and secretaire to Queen Charlotte which stands in Buckingham Palace today. Cobb was known for his elaborate use of exotic woods in his marquetry panels and a fondness for the rococo and neoclassical styles.  He also supplied furniture to the 1st Earl of Leicester at Holkham Hall, the 4th Duke of Devonshire at Chatsworth and the 4th Duke of Bedford and Woburn Abbey. Vile and Cobb held the Royal Warrant from 1761 to 1764 when Vile retired. Cobb was known to have a haughty character, and on one occasion earning a rebuke from King George III.
