The reeded and scrolled paneled crest rail centering a panel with carved adorsed cornucopia, flanked by panels with carved fasces, flanked by reeded scrolled arms continuing to a reeded seat rail, on scrolled and reeded sabre legs with carved paw feet, on casters. Upholstered in muslin.
32 3/4 x 62 x 26 in.
Note: This piece is largely based on Duncan Phyfe's larger sofa, Nancy McClelland, D. Phyfe Cabinet Maker, 1939, see plate 151. The image in McClelland's book has swags in place of fasces on the top rail. The use of the fasces motif is rare in New York furniture, and only one other sofa is known to have this carving. Cf. David B. Warren, Bayou Bend: American Furniture, Paintings and Silver in the Bayou Bend Collection, (Houston, 1975), p. 81, no. 152.
