Note: In 478 B.C., Esther became the Queen of Persia following an infamous event between King Ahasuerus and his first wife, Queen Vashti. During a large banquet, the king had asked his wife "to appear wearing only her royal crown" in front of his guests. When Vashti refused the king banished her and sent an edict throughout his kingdom that gave male subjects the right to rule over their wives in all matters. The king now sought a replacement queen and ordered the most attractive maidens brought before him. Esther was one of them and was chosen to be his wife. This work depicts the presentation of Esther in front of the king.
