Oil on board, 1968, signed 'Edith S. Carson' and dated lower right. 32 x 24 in., 33 x 25 1/4 in. (frame).Note: Edith Carson was married to painter Mark Rothko. The two met at Lake George in 1932 and married that same year. They were divorced in 1945 after a period of discord and frustration over Rothko's lack of success. Photographer Aaron Siskind introduced Rothko to Mary Alice Beistle in 1944 and he divorced Edith in 1945 to marry her. At the time, Edith was a jewelry designer and taught art classes. She began painting later in life.
