Christie's catalog note: This carpet is a magnificent example of the most iconic of all Ottoman carpets: the medallion Ushak. These carpets were first woven for the Ottoman court but became extremely fashionable in the 16th-century Europe, remaining popular well into the 18th century. We see examples of these carpets in the paintings of Vermeer, Velasquez, Zurbaran and Liotard. Early Americans also appreciated these carpets: in the famous Gilbert Stuart "Landsdowne Portrait" of George Washington from 1796, the first U. S. President stands on a very similar medallion Ushak. For more examples, see Donald King and David Sylvester, The Eastern Carpet in the Western World from the 15th to the 17th Century, London, 1983.

This carpet, although showing some wear, still has its original brilliant colors and much of its original pile. Dating to the 18th century, it belongs to a later generation of large medallion Ushak carpets but has retained the fine drawing and wonderfully rich coloring of the earlier production.
