Oil on canvas, inscribed 'Gioseppe Ribera / detto lo Spagnoletto' and 'Coll. dal sigr. Mar (?)/P.S. Bembo (?)' on the reverse. 20 x 16 in., 30 1/2 x 26 1/2 in. (frame). Note: The inscription on the back of this canvas attributes the work to Jusepe de Ribera (1591-1652), also known as José de Ribera, Gioseppe de Ribera, and Lo Spagnoletto. Ribera left his native Spain c. 1615 and settled in Naples where he spent his career. Ribera's work combines Spanish Realism with his knowledge of the work being done by Lodovico Carracci and Caravaggio in Italy. He was a precise draftsman and a prolific painter. His subjects were mainly religious scenes, using working-class sitters as models.
