Oil on canvas, lined, with label from E. Von Saher, Amsterdam on the reverse of the stretcher, with label from Collectie Goudstikker, Amsterdam. 36 x 28 in., 45 x 37 in. (frame).Note: This painting was originally part of the collection belonging to Amsterdam dealer Jacques Goudstikker, whose label is seen on the back of this work. Goudstikker and his family fled Amsterdam after the Nazi occupation, leaving behind his art gallery and collection of 1300 paintings which were looted and/or purchased below market value by the Nazis. Goudstikker died tragically while crossing the English Channel leaving his wife and young son to continue on to Canada and eventually the United States. Immediately following the war, the Allies helped in the return of Goudstikker paintings from Germany to the Dutch government. Despite many requests by the family, these painting were held in the Dutch State collections until 2006 when the family won a large reclamation claim and the works were returned to them. This painting, attributed to Velasquez in the Goudstikker Gallery catalogue no. 39 from 1931, was returned to the gallery immediately following the end of the war and was not part of the reclamation proceedings. Please see our website for a longer article on the history of this collection as well as images of supporting documentation including the personal notebook found on Goudstikker at the time of his death which lists this painting >
