Oil on canvas, unsigned, lined, with an indistinct label on the back of the stretcher. 28 1/2 x 24 1/2 in., 35 x 29 1/2 in. (frame). Note: John Jayles (also known as Hailes and Hales) was an English Baroque portrait painter contemporary to, and rival of, Sir Peter Lely and Samuel Cooper. He was also known as a good copyist of Van Dyck. Provenance: Sold Christie's, New York, January 10, 1995, Lot 54.
