Note: Ordre du Saint-Esprit, or The Order of The Holy Spirit, was the highest French order to be bestowed. Founded in 1578, the King was the head of the order and appointed one hundred knights to be members. These knights are identified by a medal with a downward facing dove in a star with a fleur de lis. It is possible that the subject of this portrait is Vice Admiral Victor Marie d'Estrées (1660-1737), who was the fifth Duke of Estrées.

Craquelure with some scattered inpainting. Surface soiling.
