Decorated with Western-style Coat of Arms over ribbon with motto in script. 6 1/2 x 13 x 8 3/4 in. Condition: Overall good condition with minor wear consistent with age and use. Some minor losses to decoration and small areas of kiln frit.
Note: The Chinese porcelain is decorated with a pseudo-'Imari' design after an 18th century Worcester porcelain pattern, the original service was created for Hay, Earl of Errol. The arms are comprised of a Bengal Tiger and elephant flanking a shield with a pale blue ground on which two fish are above an instrument. The instrument has previously been suggested to represent a trawling net. The motto translates to (in part) '…mamlik (a title) Yamin el Dowlah, Behadur (powerful)'. For a saucer dish from the service and the translation of the motto: David Howard and John Ayers, China for the West
, Sotheby Parke Bernet, London and New York, 1978, Volume II, pp. 475-476, no. 487.
