Note: Chinese artist Qinqing's ethereal hemp, grass and dried flower robes are suspended in Perspex boxes to evoke the Imperial past and the generations of Chinese women who have been imprisoned by the dictates of time, from concubines to Imperial wives and peasant women. The artist chose hemp because it appears delicate yet is very strong and can bend and stretch, much like the women who inspire her work. Hemp was also used as a floor covering in Imperial homes during the ancient dynasties, furthering Qinqing's incorporation of historical reference into her contemporary work.
