Note: Charles Schreyvogel grew up on the Lower East Side of New York City, the son of poor German immigrant shopkeepers. Like his contemporary Frederic Remington, Schreyvogel developed a love of the west and of cowboy-life, basing his works on firsthand experience during his travels out west, and working within the mythology and male fantasy of life on the range. He died unexpectedly, leaving fewer than one-hundred finished works.
