On veined red marble socle. 4 x 3 1/8 x 4 3/8 in., on socle 6 1/2 in. Provenance: Azeez Khayat, New York, 1913; The Collection of Albert Gallatin (1880-1965), New York. Exhibited: Fogg Museum of Art, Boston, Ancient Art, 1954-1955, no. 163 in the catalog. Note: The consigner’s records indicate that this lot was included in Margaret Bieber, Arndt-Amelung, Bruckmann, Munich, 1938, no. 4491 illustrated. The Series zur Vorbereitung eine Corpus Statuarum was started in 1893 by Paul Arndt and Walter Amelung and, although some volumes were written by other scholars, the series is known as Arndt-Amelung.  Copies of the entire series can be found in the libraries of the Metropolitan Museum, Yale and Princeton. Margarete Bieber was a noted scholar who fled Nazi Germany, becoming a visiting professor at Columbia in 1936.
