Note: The figure depicted here is Theobald Mathew (1790-1856), popularly known as Father Mathew. Mathew was an Irish Catholic Priest and orator known as the Apostle of Temperance. In 1838, Mathew became president of the Cork Total Abstinence Society and travelled throughout Ireland to preach his gospel. People flocked to hear him speak where whole crowds would take the temperance pledge, lowering the consumption of spirits in Ireland by 50% between 1838 and 1842. He also travelled throughout Britain, and to the United States in 1849 where he preached temperance in twenty-five states.
