Note: Swedish artist Sven Birger Sandzen came to the United States in 1894 to teach languages and assist in the art and music departments at Bethany College in Lindsborg, Kansas. He would live and work in Lindsborg for the rest of his life, the town is now home to the Birgen Sandzen Memorial Art Gallery. Sandzen was a prolific painter and printmaker, as well as a talented draftsman and teacher. His subject matter was the Western landscape interpreted in a gestural, thick impasto in bright color combinations that reference Fauvism and Pointillism.
