Note: The Didion-Dunne family spent a considerable amount of time in Hawaii. Didion wrote about Hawaii in several of her essays and books, including In the Islands, Letter from Paradise, and The Year of Magical Thinking. Her favorite hotel was The Royal Hawaiian in Honolulu on the south shore of Oahu. The hotel figures prominently in the opening of In the Islands where Didion wrote "I had better tell you where I am, and why. I am sitting in a high-ceilinged room in the Royal Hawaiian Hotel...."
