Note: Pierre Bonnard made preparatory illustrations for the lithographic book title Le Petit Solfège between 1892 and 1893. The book was conceived as a children's primer on musical theory, written by Bonnard's brother-in-law Claude Terrasse, who was a celebrated composer and musician. The book contains thirty lithographs after original drawings by Bonnard. The work here is a study for the cover of the book and is a variation on the final image chosen. Another version of the cover can be seen in the collection of the National Gallery of Art, Washington, DC.
