Oil on canvas laid down on board, unsigned. 29 1/2 x 25 in., 35 1/2 x 30 1/2 in. (frame).Note: Sir Roger Hale Sheaffe (1763-1851) was born and educated in Boston. After the death of his father in 1771, Sheaffe's mother opened a boarding house to support her ten children. One of her lodgers during the War of Independence was Lord Percy, Duke of Northumberland and leader of the British forces in Boston. Percy was taken with the young Sheaffe's character and leadership potential and sent him to military school in London. Sheaffe served in the British military in Ireland and Canada before ending his career as a full General and retiring to Edinburgh. He was awarded a baronetcy in 1813 following a military victory at Queenston Heights, in Canada.
