Bronze with gold patina, 1948, signed 'J Lipchitz' and numbered 5/7 lower back.

30 1/2 x 13 x 11 in.

Note: Other examples of this edition of 7 are in the collection of the Jewish Museum, NY and the Harvard Art Museum. A third cast was sold at Christie's, NY, May 11, 1995, Lot 364 and again November 8, 2012, Lot 504.

Lipchitz made several sculptures titled Miracle in response to his despair over the the plight of displaced Jews and Holocaust survivors aboard the ship Exodus 1947 who were returned to Europe by the British Royal Navy because they did not have immigration certificates to enter Palestine. Miracle II was made to celebrate the birth of the state of Israel in 1948.
