Illustrated in Rolf Winkes, Love for Antiquity, Selections from the Joukowsky Collection, Brown University, 1985, pg. 66-67, cat. #57.

Catalog note: "The hairstyle, the classical expression on the face and the simplicity of the folds, especially in the lower part of the statuette, are all indications of an early date, about 330-32- B.C.; later pieces are more emphatic, complicated in their cloth arrangements and sophisticated in their hairstyles or inclination of the head. Our statuette, then, resembles closely the Muses of the Basis of Mantinea, but even there, the folds of the peploi are deeper and the hair is short. Even closer resemblances can be found in a clay model in the University of Heidelberg and several other pieces which B. Neutsch has interpreted to be an Attic reaction to the emphatic style of Asia Minor and which took place in the 4th century. Our statuette is one of the finest examples of pre-tanagrean Attic production."
