Ashbee, C. R. (1863-1942): Conradin: A Philosophical Ballad, Mairet, P. A., illustrator, Essex House Press, 1908, limited edition numbered 93 of 250, with an inscription by the author, signed and dated 1929 (watermarks).

The press was founded in April 1898 as part of a larger experiment: the Guild of Handicraft. After producing over 70 works Ashbee was forced to close the press for a while in 1906 in an attempt to help ensure the survival of the Guild of Handicraft which had run into financial difficulties. With the arrival of Ananda Coomaraswamy in Broad Campden the press went back into limited production in 1907 and continued until 1910 producing a total of a further 20 substantial works, as well as a number of more ephemeral productions (Tomkinson p. 79).
