McCrae was born in Philadelphia where his father had extensive business holdings that included shipping in the Far East, South America and Europe, and real estate speculation. McCrae inherited his father's business upon his death in 1814 and was known as the largest shipowner in Philadelphia at the time, operating as many as fourteen trading vessels. From 1811-1815, McCrae was a member of the First Troop Philadelphia City Calvary where he saw active service in 1812, and was a founder of the Philadelphia Savings Fund Society.
A copy of this portrait was painted from a photograph in 1927 by Frank Linton (1871-1943) for Mr. and Mrs. Archibald McCrae of Carter's Grove, James River, VA. The painting was sold with the contents of Carter's Grove in 2008 (Northeast Auctions, May 17-18, 2008, Lot 223).
