Note accompanying this lot from the artist: "For a Captain when it was time to set sail at the wharf saying good bye to his family was a tough and heartfelt time, with the sailors absent for such a long time, Nantucket's women were obligated not only to raise the children but also oversee many of the island's business. It was the women for the most part that kept the Nantucket community functioning during the great 19th century New England whaling era. This piece is carved from 100 year old Pine boards, antique copper and iron is incorporated into the piece, and buttermilk paint is applied in numerous layers to give the piece a time worn appearance.

When the crank is turned it sets life in motion, the ship moves slightly back and forth, the sperm whale below moves about with a slight movement. The husband holds out his hands while his wife holds a heart in her hand. The children move about and look on and say their goodbyes. The angel above watches over the family during his maiden voyage and pray for a safe return home to his loved ones".
