Provenance: Alice Phillipot Paalen Rahon was a French/Mexican poet and artist. Rahon wrote Surrealist poetry while living in France, and began painting after moving to Mexico in 1934 with her first husband. Rahon was good friends with Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera, and was part of the emergence of abstract art in Mexico. Her painted work is a reflection of her written work in its use of Surrealist imagery and abstraction. Rahon was considered a pioneer at the time for her use of sand to create texture in the painted surface, as here.
