Mixed media on board, 1960, signed 'Ossorio', titled, dated and inscribed 'for Rupert Barneby Xmas 1977' on the reverse.
32 x 26 in., 34 1/4 x 28 1/4 in. (frame).
Note: Alfonso Ossorio and his life-partner Ted Dragon were friends with collectors Dwight Ripley and Rupert Barneby, having made Ripley's acquaintance through their mutual friend Peggy Guggenheim. This work was given to Rupert Barneby by Ossorio as a token of his appreciation for all of the work that Barneby did as an advisor to Ossorio on the planting of the conifer arboretum at his estate in East Hampton called The Creeks. Barneby was a distinguished botanist who spent most of his career at the New York Botanical Garden, where he wrote an authoritative monograph on the genus Dalea. Some species of dalea are commonly know as 'broom' because their stalks can be tied together to use as brooms. The title of this work derives from this nomenclature.
