Three etchings on wove paper, circa 1835, Custom House and Capitol, Indiana inscribed 'to Mr. J. Catherwood Esq. with compliments of Alex J. Davis' lower right; and with a note from A. J. David inscribed to Mr. Catherwood. Three approx. 12 X 15 in. (sheet), 8 x 5 in. (sheet), all unframed. Provenance: Sold Christie's, London, July 14, 1987, Lot 110 (partial lot). Note: Two of architect A. J. Davis' most notable Neoclassical buildings were Indiana's State Capitol (1831-35) and NYC's Custom House (1833-42). It was during this period that Davis developed his innovative fenestration system for vertically unified windows that he would later call "Davisean". This multi-storied window structure would become the modern strip window used in 20th Century skyscrapers.,
