Pencil on heavy paper, 1977, signed, dated and inscribed 'For Chris, Alex Katz' center right, with a partial pochoir on the reverse, variously inscribed in pencil.
8 x 15 3/8 in. (sheet), 13 1/2 x 18 7/8 in. (frame).
Note: The pochoir on the reverse is Al Held, apart from the edition of 24 printed in 1976. The image here appears to be half of the dimensions of the published edition, which were 15 3/8 x 15 3/8 in. (sheet).
Note: Christopher Walling met Alex and Ada Katz in 1975 through Walling's partner, Sanford Schwartz, who was writing about the artist at the time. The couples shared a long friendship, vacationing in Maine and on the island of Nevis together. During a stay on Nevis in 1977, Katz asked the group if he could paint them on the beach. The study in this lot was a preparatory sketch for the finished painting titled Round Hill. The figures in the finished painting include Ada (in sunglasses), Vincent Katz (reading), Christopher Walling (reclining in the back), Elizabeth Cramer (at left, a friend of Walling's and Schwartz's) and Sanford Schwartz (in the foreground). The finished painting is in the collection of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and was recently exhibited at the Guggenheim Museum's 2023 retrospective Alex Katz: Gathering.
