Albrecht Dürer (1471-1528): Christ Crowned with Thorns, from The Small Passion

Note: Dürer began working on the Small Passion series of woodcuts circa 1509 and completed the thirty-seven woodblocks in 1510. The series begins with The Fall of Man and ends with The Last Judgement. The Small Passion was first published in 1511 with Latin verses by Benedictus Chelidonius printed on the facing pages. An Italian edition was published in 1612 with the verses in Italian. Other printings from Dürer's original plates were made in Venice in the early 16th century by Marantonio Raimondi and later in the 16th century by Virgil Solis, the latter carry the publisher's monogram VS. There also exists a set made in the 19th century from metal plates made from plaster casts from the original woodblocks after they were given to the British Museum in 1839.  In 1844, Henry Cole published a collection of the prints for the South Kensington Museum, now the Victoria and Albert Museum. There also exist copies of the prints, the most notable are those published by Mommard. 

 

This print, as well as lots 356-359, were deaccessioned from the Städel Musuem, Frankfurt, on October 5, 1874 when the collection was merged with the prints collection of the city library at Boerner, Leipzig. Presumably from the 1511 edition, the printing date of these impressions is not known.
