Acrylic on paper on board, 1960, signed 'Al Held' and dated on a paper remnant and signed 'Al Held', titled and dated on the reverse, with label from Robert Miller Gallery, NY. 37 1/2 x 37 1/2 in., unframed. Note: Painted in 1960 as Held transitioned from using oil paint to acrylics, this work is part of a series that tackles Held's ideas about post-painterly abstraction, or the new abstraction. Held's 1950s work in short, thick, gestural strokes in an earth-tone palette developed into brightly colored long brushstrokes that combined to create geometric shapes, as we see here. The drips at the edges of the color lines are reminiscent of his painterly Abstract Expressionist work.
