Note: This composition relates to Rubens' The Judgement of Paris in the National Gallery, London, as well as to the work attributed to his studio in the Gemaldegalerie Alte Meister, Dresden. The Judgement of Paris is a story from Greek mythology that served as the subject of many paintings from the Middle Ages through the 20th century. Rubens painted the subject in several different compositions and has been copied many times. Justus Muller Hofstede examined this painting in 1964 and attributed it to Peter Paul Rubens. He referenced the painting in an article he wrote in 1989 titled Stolidi Iudicium Paridis. Zur Ikonologie des Parisurteils bei Peter Paul Rubens. Hofstede also identified the wax seal on the cradle as the coat-of-arms of the Trevor-Roper Curzon family. A recent opinion suggested that the painting is After Rubens.
