Bronze, on a metal pedestal, inscribed 'Picasso' lower right. 16 x 8 x 9 in. Note: Originally conceived and sculpted in clay in 1909, Picasso's Tête de Femme (Fernande) was cast in an edition of 9 in 1960. The sitter is Fernande Olivier, Picasso's companion during the summer of 1909 in Horta de Ebro, Spain. The sculpture shows the central themes of what would soon be called Cubism in the recessed planes, shifting angles and breakdown of the shape of the head. Picasso's dealer, Ambroise Vollard, bought the clay sculpture from Picasso in 1910 and, with the artist's permission, had it cast in plaster and then in bronze. The date of the casting of this example is unknown.,
