Pastel on laid paper, unsigned, with label inscribed 'Camargo' lower center. 13 3/8 x 10 1/4 in. (sight), 15 3/4 x 12 3/4 in. (frame).Note: Marie Anne de Cupis Camargo (1710-1770) was famous for being an innovative dancer in the Paris Opera Ballet. Making her stage debut with the company at age 22, La Camargo" as she was known, was the first dancer to forgo the traditional heeled dancing shoe in favor of the slipper, and she was the first female performer to execute the entrechat quatre. This move required the dancer to leap in the air replacing the right leg in front of the left then switching in mid-air, landing as they began. She was a darling of the stage and the court and appeared in more than 70 ballets and operas in her lifetime."
