Note: Thorvaldsen's original marble reliefs depicting the Four Seasons are in the collection of the Thorvaldsen Museum in Copenhagen, Denmark. Thordvaldesen was born into poverty in Denmark, leaving his native country when he was admitted to the Royal Academy of Fine Art and returning to Denmark as a world-famous artist who had taken commissions from the royal families of Europe as well as the Pope. The nineteenth century photographs in this lot reproduce the classical figures for which Thordvaldsen was known. Interestingly, a French photographer named Aymard Charles Theodore Neubourg visited Copenhagen in 1840 and took a photograph of Thorvaldsen in his studio which is now one of the earliest known extant daguerreotypes.

All sheets mounted on heavy card. A few unobstrusive surface scuffs and some soiling. Pale light- staining. Some small scuffs and tiny losses showing in mostly places around the edges of the sheet.
